The Book of 1 Thessalonians-Lesson 6 (1 Thessalonians 4:11-18)

Comfort One Another

http://www.daily-bible-reading.com

Daily Devotions:

Today’s Daily-Bible-Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 4:11-18. In today’s Bible study we'll continue with the book of 1 Thessalonians. In this portion of the letter, Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to live a quiet life, mind their own business, and work with their hands as they taught them. Why do you think Paul tells them that? He tells them this way they can walk in honesty before those who aren't yet Christians. Paul’s desire for the Thessalonians was that they lack nothing.

Paul doesn't want them to be ignorant about those who sleep. What does Paul mean by that statement? He didn't want them to be concerned about the Christians who died before Jesus’ return. Paul tells them not to be sorrowful, like those who have no hope. As Christians if we have a loved one who is a Christian pass away, we have the hope of seeing them again in heaven. Whereas, those who aren't Christians don't have that hope. He says if we believe Jesus died and rose again; likewise, God will bring those who are dead in Christ back with Him when He comes.

Paul says, "For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Paul tells them to comfort one another with these words. That promise is something for the Christian to hold onto and to be comforted by. Knowing that in the end, Jesus will come back and gather His children. Those who are dead in Christ will rise first; and meet those Christians who are still living in the air along with Jesus. We'll all go to live in heaven for eternity with Christ in the presence of God. I hope you find comfort in these words.

Daily Bible Scripture

1 Thessalonians 4:11-18

11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Things to think about:

  • What did Paul advise the Thessalonians?
  • What did Paul tell us about those who have gone on before us?
  • Are you comforted by the words of Paul in this Scripture?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. We see where Paul tells the Thessalonians to live quiet lives, minding their own business and working with their hands. Help us to live in that way, also. Paul tells them they don’t have to worry about the Christians who have gone on before them. Help us to have that same hope of seeing them again. Help us to look forward to the coming of Lord and comfort one another with the hope that we have through Christ. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Devotions:

Today’s Daily-Bible-Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20. In today’s Bible study, we'll continue our study of the book of 1 Thessalonians. Paul says he is thankful to God, continually for the Thessalonians. He was thankful that when he preached the gospel to them they received it. How did Paul know they received it?

They didn’t receive the gospel as mere words from a man, but as a message from God. The power of the gospel was evident in their lives. They received God’s Word as truth. They became followers of God. Not only were they followers, but they also spread the gospel.

The Thessalonians also suffered persecution for spreading the gospel. The Jews didn't like the fact that the Gentiles could come to know God without first becoming a Jew. There were those who not only persecuted the followers of Jesus, but they also killed Jesus, by His death on the cross. Paul tells them not to worry, because God would take care of those who persecuted them. Romans 12:19 reminds us of this, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

Paul talks of his great love for the Thessalonians, and his desire to see them again. Even though Paul desired to see the Thessalonians, Paul acknowledges that Satan had hindered them. Paul knew that even if he didn’t see them again here on this earth, he would see them in the presence of Jesus at His coming. Paul exhorts them by saying that they are his glory and joy.

Daily Bible Scripture
:

1 Thessalonians 2:13-20

13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.

18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 For ye are our glory and joy.

Things to think about:

  • Have you received the gospel?

  • How could Paul tell the Thessalonians had received the gospel?

  • What did Paul tell the Thessalonians they were to him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. Paul talks to the Thessalonians about how they believed and received Your Word. He tells them that it is evident through their actions that they believed the gospel which he preached to them as the true Word of God. Help us to have the same kind of faith and belief that the Thessalonians did. Paul tells them that they are his glory and joy. Lord, give us this kind of fellowship with other believers. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

 Redeem the Time

http://www.daily-bible-reading.comDaily Devotions:

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Colossians 4:1-18. In today's Bible study we continue with the book of Colossians whose emphasis is on Christ as the head of the church. Paul wrote this letter to the church of Colosse because of his concern for the heresies that were cropping up in that area. Paul didn't attack the heresies, but he exalted Jesus Christ. Why do you think Paul did it in that way?

In this chapter, Paul starts talking to masters or slave owners telling them to treat their servants just and fair, remembering that they have a Master in heaven. Paul tells them to devote themselves to prayer, to be watchful, and always thankful for everything.

Paul reminds them to pray specifically. He wants them to pray that God will open doors for them to preach about the mystery of Christ. The mystery of the gospel is that the gospel of Christ was also for the gentiles. Paul was in prison for preaching the gospel.

Paul asks them to pray that he may be able to teach and make known this mystery. He tells them to walk in wisdom toward the lost so they can redeem the time. Paul says they should speak with grace, seasoned with salt, so they may know how to answer everyone.

Paul sent Tychicus, his beloved brother and faithful minister to the Colossians to let them know how they were doing and to encourage them in the Lord. He along with Onesimus, who is also a faithful and beloved brother, and is one of the Colossians, will let Paul know what is going on with the Colossians.

Aristarchus who was in prison with Paul, sent his greetings to the Colossians as well. Marcus, who is Barnabas’ cousin, sent his greetings also. Paul encouraged the Colossians to welcome Mark if he came to minister to them. Jesus, who we call Justus, also sent his greetings. These were Paul's co-laborers for the kingdom of God, who were a great comfort to Paul.

Epaphras, a servant of Christ, who was one of the Colossians, also sent his greeting to the Colossians.  He was always praying for them that they might stand perfect and complete in the will of God. Paul bared witness of his great concern for the Colossians and for those at Laodicea and Hieraplis. Luke, the beloved physician and Demas also sent their greetings. It sounds like Paul had a whole team of people working with him.

Paul reminds the Colossians to say hello to the brethren at Laodicea and the ones that have church in the home of Nymphas. He tells them to make sure they read this letter to the church of Laodicea also. Paul tells them to tell Archippus to be sure and carry out the work the Lord had given him to do. Paul ends the letter by saying grace be with you.

Daily Bible Scripture:

Colossians 4:1-18

1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:

8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;

9 With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.

10 Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him:)

11 And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only [are my] fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.

12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

13 For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.

14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

15 Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.

16 And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the [epistle] from Laodicea.

17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.

18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace [be] with you. Amen. [[[The following was added by editors of the KJV: Written from Rome to Colossians by Tychicus and Onesimus.]]]

Things to think about:

  • What was Paul's concern for the Colossians in this Scripture?
  • Who were the partners that were working with Paul in this Scripture?
  • What lessons have you learned from Paul's letter to the Colossians?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Colossians. We have learned a lot from this letter Paul wrote to the Colossians. We see in this part of the letter that Paul puts a special emphasis on prayer. Help us to pray without ceasing and to be watchful for Your return. Help us to be thankful for everything You have done for us and given us, especially the gift of salvation. Help us to have wisdom and grace when dealing with those that are lost, that we might win them for Your kingdom. Thank You for the people You send along side of us to serve and worship You. We love You, LORD. Amen.

The Book of Philippians-Lesson 10 (Philippians 4:10-23)

BE CONTENT IN CHRIST

Daily-Bible-Reading

Daily Devotions:

Today’s Daily-Bible-Reading is from Philippians 4:10-23. In today’s Bible study we continue with the book of Philippians. We see in Paul’s letter to the Philippians that Paul was rejoicing because the Philippians cared for him. What did Paul mean when he said they lacked opportunity? The Philippians lost touch with Paul for two years, while he was in prison. They didn't know where he was. Once they heard that Paul was in prison in Rome they reconnected with him.

Paul says he learned that whatever state he was in to be content. Paul knew what it meant to be full and he knew how it felt to be hungry. He had times in his life of having plenty and times of lack. He learned through it all to be content in Christ.

This is a lesson we all need to learn from Paul. It is easy to be content when things are going right in our lives. It is much harder to be content when life is difficult. We need to learn to trust God enough to be content no matter what our circumstances are.

Sometimes God puts us in difficult circumstances so we can learn to trust Him more. If life was always easy we would think we could do everything on our own. Sometimes it is in the difficult times that we learn to be dependent on God. We learn not to do things in our own strength. We learn that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.

Two of my favorite verses are in this passage. The first one is, Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." This is a verse that has given me strength from time to time in my life. I have quoted it over and over in difficult times and it has strengthened me to endure the battles of this life. The next one is, Philippians 4:19, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." This verse I have claimed during times of doubt and concern about the future and it has comforted me and calmed my spirit knowing I could trust in God to supply all of my needs.

Paul thanks the Philippians for their support of his ministry. The Philippians were the only ones who supported Paul financially in the beginning of his ministry. Paul was thankful that the Philippians cared for him. He was also happy that they were going to be blessed because of their fruitful giving to God’s work.

Paul thanks the Philippians for the offerings that they sent to him by Epaphroditus. He says it was well pleasing to God. Paul trusted God to supply all his needs. Paul also trusted God to supply the needs of the Philippians according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Paul gave God the glory for everything.

Paul closes this letter by sending a salutation to every saint. He wanted to acknowledge them all and thank them for everything they did for him. Paul tells the Philippians that all the brethren and saints with him salute them also, especially those of the house of Caesar. Paul ends the letter by saying, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”

Daily Bible Scripture:

Philippians 4:10-23

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

14 Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.

15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.

16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.

17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

20 Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

21 Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren which are with me greet you.

22 All the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household.

23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. [[[The following was added by editors of the KJV: To [the] Philippians written from Rome, by Epaphroditus.]]]

Things to think about:

  • Do you depend on God to meet your needs?

  • Do you lean on God for strength?

  • Have you become content in Christ?

Prayer of the Day
:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of Philippians. We see that Paul says he has learned to be content with his life no matter what the circumstances are. Help us to be content in Christ. Paul was thankful for the Philippians and their contribution to his ministry. Help us to be thankful for the people You bring into our lives to help support us and lift us up to You in prayer. Paul trusted You to supply all of his needs. Help us to have the same kind of faith and trust in You as Paul did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
